Lab Technician

Oxford, permanent, full time

Rocktype is a small geological consultancy based in Oxford. We are seeking a self-motivated and responsible person to work in our lab. Tasks include preparing samples of rock or sand for automated mineralogy analysis plus basic use of analysis tools. The technician will be in charge of lab maintenance and will ensure the day-to-day running of the lab.

Scope of responsibility

  • Prepare geological samples for analysis. Includes cleaning, cutting, sieving, mounting, grinding, polishing and carbon coating
  • Load prepared samples in a scanning electron microscope
  • Maintain rock sample archive and database
  • Handle, catalogue and ship client samples
  • Maintain lab records and data summaries
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of lab equipment
  • Manage work areas to ensure they are clean, safe and well-organised
  • Perform Quality Control and contribute to new QC procedures
  • Perform regular stock checks of consumables and order as required
  • Participation in continuous improvement of equipment and procedures


  • University level education in a scientific or engineering subject
  • General understanding of standard lab equipment
  • Be computer literate with key systems skills
  • Highly organised with outstanding attention to detail
  • Process oriented with ability to reliably follow procedures
  • Ability to take responsibility and work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills

Nice to have:

  • Experience in a similar technical role
  • Experience of data analysis such as using R or Matlab
  • An understanding of Agile methodologies
  • Experience working in a small science or technology company
